Host nation Morocco shook off a jittery beginning to overcome their island opponents in the competition's inaugural fixture on the weekend, thanks to Brahim DĂaz and super-sub Ayoub El Kaabi in the latter period.
It was a far from convincing performance, though, from the highly fancied hosts, who sit 97 places above the small Indian Ocean nation in the FIFA rankings and were forced to grind out for the points in rainy conditions at the national stadium.
Morocco failed to convert an first-half spot-kick and were goalless at the interval despite controlling the ball, finally breaking the deadlock in the 55th minute.
It came when full-back Mazraoui showed great skill to prevent the ball from going out before slipping it across for Brahim DĂaz to calmly pass into the net.
Every first match is never easy but we came good in the second period,â commented manager Walid Regragui.
The tension was then calmed by a piece of sheer individual brilliance from Ayoub El Kaabi. Just 10 minutes after coming on, the striker met a cross with a spectacular bicycle kick in the 74th minute, doubling and sealing the result.
Before that, the Moroccan team might have taken ahead in the 11th minute when a penalty was awarded for a challenge on DĂaz. Yet, Soufiane Rahimi penalty was kept out by Comoros goalkeeper Yannick Pandor.
The underdogs comfortably held Morocco at bay before the Moroccans' greater quality in the end made the difference.
Goalkeeper Pandor made a number of other good stops to keep down the score as the match wore on, although his team created a clear opportunity for an equaliser shortly after DĂaz's goal, with SaĂŻd firing directly into keeper Yassine Bounou.
The three points was partially overshadowed by an injury to the skipper, Romain SaĂŻss, who limped off in the first half apparently in tears.
This centre-back had only returned to the international setup recently after a yearâs layoff due to ankle surgery.
This result extends Morocco's historic run of consecutive victories to nineteen, surpassing the old best of 15 set by Spain from 2008 and 2009.
