A trio of officers were killed and more than a dozen others were hurt in what appears to be premeditated detonation from gas at a country home in Italy's north.
The explosion took place as police and firefighters entered the house in the vicinity of the city of Verona to execute an removal notice for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.
Each of the three officers killed belonged to the Italian military police.
One male and one female were taken into custody at the scene and another man who fled subsequent to the blast was located soon after. Each of them have been taken to medical facility.
The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the location revealed the structure turned into a heap of debris.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.
The president of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the residence was subject to an eviction order due to debts incurred by the property owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to engage the family members who had locked themselves into the home. When the police reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe one of the siblings triggered the explosion.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed news outlets.
A propane tank had been activated, and the explosion immediately struck our personnel,” he explained.
Incendiary devices were also discovered at the site, the minister stated.
Those injured by the explosion comprised an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.
According to the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.
He thought the explosion had happened on a story above the entrance and told reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the incident, he revealed members had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas cylinders being turned on”.
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors told local news, adding that the three had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
Defence Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three men who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
