The 'Tuna King' is a prominent presence at the traditional bidding war.

A substantial bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the new year.

The top bid for the 243kg fish was submitted by the company of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which runs outlets across the country and overseas.

"The year's tuna signals fortune," stated the business owner, a notable participant at the yearly new year's auction.

Dubbed the Tuna King, this businessman is renowned for placing record bids for bluefin tuna at these high-profile January auctions.

Auction Surprise and Record-Setting Past

After the auction, the winner told journalists that he was "surprised at the final price," noting, "I believed we would be able to buy it a little at a lower price, but the price soared rapidly."

This latest acquisition surpasses his previous record purchases:

  • He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He spent 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).

Despite previously commenting that he thought he "did too much," he has now proceeded to shatter his personal record another time.

An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids

The inaugural auction at the Toyosu fish market is traditionally known for exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the first tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by another food company, which announced the fish would be served at its eateries across Japan.

The high-energy activity at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has evolved into a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no different.

Swift Service

The multi-million-dollar tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for patrons at the bidder's sushi establishments soon after the auction concluded.

"I believe like I've started the year in a auspicious way after consuming something so auspicious as the year begins," remarked one happy patron.
