The English golfer Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Playoff Battle Versus Tommy Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer displayed remarkable nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff after a topsy-turvy last day of competition.

The Englishman sank a crucial birdie putt from just over eight feet to seal the victory, echoing his sole prior tournament success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off win over the same opponent.

Sunday's Play Excitement

The champion entered the last day with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai HĂžjgaard. He finished with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 final round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.

The challenger moved a stroke clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the final hole.

Play-Off Decider

That set up a playoff at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to take the championship and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13m) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even more individual. To compete alongside him the last two days was truly memorable,” said Rai, the present world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on your game and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to put into words at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”

Other Contenders

The Northern Irish star found himself just too much to do, finishing one shot short in a shared third place with HĂžjgaard, after a stunning 62 final round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever score on the DP World Tour, comprising eight birdies and an eagle.

HĂžjgaard fired six birdies of his own, but his hopes of leading the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell hit an excellent final-round 63 to finish tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
