Get ready, as every year since 1999, Pantone announces a defining hue. This choice is a reflection of the zeitgeist—influencing everything from our emotions and our wardrobe selections to interior styling. 2025's color was the darker neutral "a creamy brown," following the soft and warm "a fuzzy pastel."
The new announcement, though, is particularly baffling. It is "an airy shade," described by a "billowy, balanced white."
Laurie Pressman, the vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, stated that it is "an essential foundational hue … allowing all colors to stand out."
Interesting, Cloud Dancer… wait, white? Could they be trolling us? Does white qualify as a proper color?
How does one describe the shade of milk? Milk? Although people often think of white as a color, the entire spectrum is fundamentally a range of visible light. You can find it in a child's crayon box, so for practical purposes the answer is yes.
If Pantone is being provocative is trickier to figure out. According to their release, Cloud Dancer pairs effortlessly with other colors, avoids sensory overload, embodies understated style, and exudes subtle elegance.
The public reaction, on the other hand, has not been as kind. Several voices have declared Pantone of being completely "Pantonedeaf." Trend analyst Mandy Lee labeled it "disappointing." Others have drawn parallels to implied endorsement of certain ideologies seen in recent advertising.
Okay, hopefully they're happily ignorant that this isn't the best moment to be pointedly celebrating whiteness... So, how should I rarely near a catwalk incorporate this news in daily life? My kitchen ceiling is my kitchen ceiling white, is that enough?

Definitely not. Attempting to remove red wine stains from a white shirt? I don't need additional cleaning headaches in 2026.
I do possess a pair of now off-white sandals, and those are always in vogue.
